Design system

2023-

A design system for Heeros.

Company

Heeros

My role

My task was to implement design system thinking within the company, to create and manage a component library in figma, to document and design different use cases, and to create a consistent look and feel to be integrated onto different products.

About project

Heeros is a SaaS company with multiple different financial management products. The project stemmed from the need to modernise and unify products, and to better manage the designs between (and inside) the products.

The design system will facilitate the work of developers, designers and product owners, as well as communication between the parties. The aim is to reduce the time spent by developers building similar components across products.

What I learned

The hands-on skill that this project has teached me is how to make complex but easy-to-use components for Figma, suitable for different uses. Designing new features to serve the needs of several existing products seamlessly has been a challenge and also implementing and adapting new features to suit different groups is time-consuming and sometimes very difficult. But what I've noticed is that a positive attitude, listening to all parties, and their feeling of being heard is important for the acceptance of design system thinking. The use of a component library (in this case Material UI) has made the work much easier, especially when you do remember and can read the documentation. I'm still learning a lot since the project is ongoing.
